Ask Lusso – Favorite Domestic Airlines

Oct 19, 2011 by

Recently we asked a number of travel experts for input on the best airlines to fly. We received nearly two dozen responses from people who travel regularly for business and pleasure. Below is a synopsis of their input and advice for domestic airlines:

Southwest

Southwest Airline

Southwest Airlines is the most favored for allowing 2 free bags, cheap rates, on-time departures, lack of weather delays, friendly airline personnel, complimentary snacks, ability to change flights without a penalty, airlines in loads of US destinations, and no lost luggage. Brenda Jones of Hug Wraps summarized the favorable attitude towards this airline: ”My motto has become, ‘If Southwest does not fly there, I don’t need to go!’” However, opinions varied regarding whether or not having unassigned seating was a good thing or a hassle.

virgin america

Virgin America

As Travel + Leisure’s passenger report indicated, Virgin America ranks the highest of US airlines and places 5th in the world!  Andy Abramson from Comunicano listed a few reasons why:

1. WiFi on every plane
2. Easy online reservations
3. Upgrade options in advance or day of flight
4. Clear pricing
5. Great in flight service by very happy to be there flight attendants

Isaac Rau of iCheapAirfares further explained, “Their in-flight entertainment system, RED, allows you to purchase chicken parmesan wraps and watch Kung Fu Panda 2 on soon to be upgraded HD screens.”

jetBlue

jetBlue

However, Rau noted, “The only downside is the minimal amount of destinations that VA serves, which is where jetBlue and Southwest Airlines enter the fray.” Rau loved Jet Blue for the leg room and affordability, though travel blogger Roni Weiss noted, “Their prices aren’t as competitive as years ago.” Anna M. Aquino prefers Jet Blue for being a more upscale airline.

As for airlines with poor reviews, Renée Cutaia of Hillgate Communications strongly disliked both Delta and US Airways. Australian Jim Dailakis claimed flying Delta for three years at the recommendation of a friend was his worst flying experiences ever. Dailakisc surmised, “He keeps forgetting that he’s an elite member and I’m not.”  Several passengers with premium status in fact raved about Delta making it seem that a difference in service could depend on the customer’s frequent flying status.
